The Arizona Association of Physicians of Indian Origin, was conceptualized by few physicians like Bhupendra Bhatheja in 1983. This was out of necessity. Several physicians of Indian origin were being denied Arizona license to practice medicine in spite of more than adequate education and training in their fields. Several physician couples ended up moving out of state because one of their colleague was denied this opportunity to practice medicine in this state. Initial group to bring this organization into existence included Drs. G. L. Bansal, N. R. Chandragiri, K. Gosalia, S. Gunnala, J. Mangalat, J. Sampat and G. Shah.

In 1986, The organization was registered as IMA of Arizona, and joined forces with national AAPI (American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin). Initial aims and objectives included educating American community about Foreign Medical Graduates, engage in public discussions with relative groups about issues of concern, conduct scientific meetings, support medical education and cooperate with other organizations with similar goals.

In 1994, the name was changed form IMA to AAPIO, more commonly known as AAPI, to include the interests of Second Generation Indian Americans and to include them as an integral part of this organization. Some of the Presidents who need to be recognized for their contribution to this organization are: Drs. J Mangalat, S. Kattakar, B. Bhatheja, H. Misra, S. Ranjan, C. Monder, J. Sraow and R. Muddaraj, Yogin Chabra.

Over the course of time, significant achievements have been made:

ArMA now has language to reflect the uniformity of licensing process for IMG's (International Medical Graduates
AAPI has conducted many functions for different health topics for the community at large, including Indian American community
AAPI has philanthropically has been active especially at times of need
Health fairs has been a service of the AAPI and need to be re-offered to the community
CME and non-medical education programs such as HIPAA have become part and parcel of function of AAPI.

Aims and Objectives

AAPI will engage itself in community education programs by way of paper, broadcast, electronic media and live lecture series.
Increased efforts will be made to reach all new physicians in practice and in training.
AAPI will engage in local and multi-site national research studies under the leadership of Dr. Vijay.
Increase membership and make AAPI the premier ethnic organization in the state of Arizona.
AAPI will actively engage in community health related projects.

Continued enthusiasim is the necessity of meaningful existence of our organization and therefore need for your continued support.
